Overview

The eastern Serengeti plains stretch across a vast expanse, beginning just east of Naabi Hill and extending through landmarks such as the Gol Kopjes, Lemuta Hill, Nasera Rock, Angata Kiti, and the Salei Plains, reaching all the way to the Ngorongoro Highlands and the active Mount Lengai. From west to east, this area spans roughly 50 miles. Its southern edge lies near Olduvai Gorge, while the northern boundary stretches into the Loliondo Game Controlled Area.

Much like the southern Serengeti, the eastern plains are highly seasonal. In the dry season, the landscape takes on a semi-arid character, where only a few resilient Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles remain. During the green season, from November through May, the plains flourish with vegetation and wildlife, offering incredible opportunities to witness Africa’s most iconic species. Including at least one full-day excursion to the eastern plains is a must for any green season safari.

The Gol Kopjes on the eastern Serengeti plains host some of the highest concentrations of cheetahs in Africa during the green season. Many of the Serengeti’s cheetahs are migratory, following the Thomson’s gazelle migration to the eastern short grass plains during the wet months before returning to the central Serengeti plains and woodland areas in the dry season. This makes the eastern plains the premier destination for cheetah sightings in both the Serengeti and across Africa. On a full-day game drive in this region, you are likely to see multiple cheetah groups. As diurnal hunters, cheetahs are active during the day, offering excellent chances to witness the world’s fastest land animal in action.

The eastern plains are also home to large hyena clans during the green season, often seen from Naabi Hill through the Gol Kopjes and Lemuta Hill. Hyenas are the most numerous predators in the ecosystem and travel to the eastern plains during the wet season from their dens in the central Serengeti. Lion sightings are plentiful in the eastern plains as well. While most lions are resident, about 20 percent are nomadic and follow migratory herds each wet season. Lions are more commonly observed around the Gol Kopjes area rather than further east beyond Lemuta Hill.

The eastern plains play a key role in the migration patterns of Thomson’s gazelles and elands. Unlike wildebeest and zebras, these species heavily utilize the eastern plains rather than the southern plains. During the green season, visitors can expect to encounter thousands of gazelles and hundreds of elands across this thriving ecosystem.

During the green season, the eastern plains host a distinct segment of the wildebeest migration, often numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Travelers can expect to see vast herds stretching from the Gol Kopjes eastward through Angata Kiti and across the Salei Plains near the active Mount Lengai. The Salei Plains are among the driest areas in the Serengeti, but when rainfall brings fresh green grass, enormous wildebeest gatherings form. It is not unusual to witness two or even three hundred thousand wildebeest grazing these plains. The eastern plains offer nutrient-rich grasses thanks to the volcanic soils from the highlands, making them a preferred feeding ground. This remote and stunning region provides truly off-the-beaten-path wildlife experiences, ideal for adventurous visitors seeking exceptional game viewing in Northern Tanzania.

Off-road driving is permitted in the Gol Kopjes, but always maintain a safe and respectful distance from cheetahs, especially if they are hunting, have a recent kill, or are with cubs. Cheetahs are delicate animals and can easily abandon prey or even their young if they feel threatened. Avoid encouraging your driver to approach too closely, as they may unintentionally cause stress while trying to give you a closer view. Respecting their space ensures these magnificent predators remain undisturbed and the experience stays safe and memorable for everyone.
